On-page SEO is where strategy meets the page itself. It's the bridge between technical health and topical authority โ the work that turns a crawlable page into a page that actually ranks for what your customers are searching.
Start With Search Intent, Not Keywords
The fastest way to fail at on-page SEO is to write for a keyword instead of for the searcher. Before you optimize anything, look at what's currently ranking on page one. If it's all listicles, your 800-word essay won't break in. If it's product pages, your blog post probably won't either.
Match the format. Match the depth. Then beat it.
Title Tags: Your Single Most Important On-Page Element
The title tag is the headline Google shows in search results โ and it's the single biggest on-page lever you can pull. A few rules that consistently work:
- Keep it under 60 characters so it doesn't get truncated.
- Lead with the primary keyword, but write for humans first.
- Include a number, year, or modifier (Best, Guide, How to) when it fits naturally.
- Front-load the unique value of the page โ don't bury it.
Meta Descriptions: The CTR Lever
Meta descriptions don't directly affect rankings, but they massively affect click-through rate โ and CTR feeds back into rankings over time. Write them like ad copy: specific benefit, social proof, soft CTA. Don't stuff keywords. Don't repeat your title.
Heading Hierarchy and Content Structure
Use one H1 per page. It should match (or closely echo) your title tag. Your H2s become the spine of the article โ each one a sub-topic that someone might search for separately.
The trick is to write H2s like search queries. "How long does technical SEO take?" beats "Timeline." Google reads headings as a topic outline; the more closely your outline maps to actual user questions, the more featured-snippet real estate you'll capture.
Internal Linking: The Most Underused SEO Tactic
Every internal link does three things: it passes authority between pages, tells Google which pages on your site are most important, and helps search engines understand topical relationships.
The mistake most sites make: linking only from the navigation. Real internal-linking power comes from contextual links inside body content, with descriptive anchor text. If you publish a new pillar page, go back through your existing content and add 5โ10 links to it from related posts.
Image SEO and Page Experience
Images are the most overlooked optimization on most sites. Three quick wins:
- Compress them. Use modern formats โ WebP or AVIF โ and aim for under 200 KB per image.
- Write descriptive alt text. "Woman holding laptop in coffee shop" beats "image1.jpg."
- Use descriptive filenames.

URL Structure and Canonicals
Short, descriptive, lowercase, hyphenated URLs win. Avoid query parameters, dates, and category bloat in the path. /seo/local-seo reads better than /blog/2026/05/06/post-id-12345/local-seo-tips.
And every page should have a self-referencing canonical tag โ even if you don't have duplicate content yet. It's the simplest insurance policy in SEO.
The On-Page SEO Checklist
- Title tag under 60 characters with primary keyword
- Meta description 140โ160 characters, written like ad copy
- One H1, then H2s structured around real search queries
- Primary keyword in the first 100 words
- 3โ5 contextual internal links to related content
- Compressed images with descriptive alt text and filenames
- Clean URL structure with self-referencing canonical
- FAQ schema on pages that answer common questions
The Bottom Line
On-page SEO isn't about gaming Google. It's about being unambiguously the best result for the query you're targeting โ and giving search engines every signal they need to recognize that.
